TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - College students need items, and they need them cheap.
Last year, College of Business senior Dane Theisen created an online marketplace for University of Toledo students to buy, sell, and trade anything. It's called MyCollegeStuff.net.

"We're just bringing all aspects of college culture into one convenient website for the students," Theisen said.

The site functions like Craigslist, allowing students to post what they're selling and what they need.
Things like an office desk, or a night stand, microwave or Tupperware.

This year, My College Stuff rolled out something new: The Hub.
"The cool thing about The Hub is that it offers a safe meeting location for students," VP Josh Marvin said. "You get on other websites and you have to meet with someone random at some random location, and that's not safe. So, it's really what we're trying to offer is the safe atmosphere."

The staff worked out a deal to house The Hub in one apartment complex clubhouse.
Now they have a brick-and-mortar location to not only do business, but also to let students meet safely.

"What campus around the nation wouldn't want a safe place for their students to go and be able to sell things?" asks Bailey Giacci, the CNO of MyCollegeStuff.net.
The University of Toledo is the test market as Theisen and his team have every intention of taking the concept nationwide.

While some students purchase their textbooks from the University Bookstore, view apartments through Craigslist, and buy their furniture off e-Bay, Dane Theisen and Josh Marvin, UT seniors majoring in international business and marketing, are providing another option.
After noticing the struggle students went through to sell back their books, Theisen and Marvin created and launched MyCollegeStuff.net to offer another outlet for those selling and buying various goods.
While gaining sponsorship through Campus Village Communities, College Ruled, Olde Towne Campus Square and Taylor Kia, the pair has been able to offer students the opportunity to buy and sell textbooks, furniture, cars and electronics, as well as trade information about area apartments and jobs.
“We created MyCollegeStuff.net to revolutionize the way college students save money in all aspects of their college career. We provide them with a way to connect with their peers,” Marvin said.
According to the website, MyCollegeStuff.net is “more than just a place to sell your stuff”; it is also a marketing space for student organizations and campus events.
Theisen credits his mother for sparking his interest in business.
“As a kid, I always wanted to own a business or to become a CEO of a large corporation. When I was 13, my mom passed away but my ambition and determination did not die. I just wanted to do something good with my life to make her proud,” Theisen said.
Last week they launched a new hub, For Students By Students, located at the old Campus Village clubhouse, 1500 College Drive in Toledo.
“The MyCollegeStuff hub will provide a controlled environment where students can exchange their goods with other students,” Thiesen said. “Stuff also can be left at our location, and we will try to sell it for you.”

Selling College ‘stuff’ on the Web,
Business major creates Craigslist-like Web site for UT students
By: Oreanna Carthorn

 Thursday, March 18, 2010

Dane Theisen, a senior majoring in international business marketing, has developed “the Craigslist for college students” with an online business called MyCollegeStuff.net.

Theisen said his idea to create the Web site was fueled by a disappointment with the variety at UT’s Barnes and Nobles bookstore in the Student Union Building and a desire to start his own business.

“It’s like those stupid things that end up turning into a business; it was a joke as first,” he said. “I just started going with it, spinning it off people, and I realized, hey this is good idea.”

What began as a “joke” turned out to be profitable when the first six months of sales brought Theisen back about 50 percent of what he invested into the Web site.

UT student has internet success
WTOL 11 Top Stories

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - An international business student at the University of Toledo has made his new online business profitable in just a matter of months. Around six months ago Dane Theisen launched his online marketplace MyCollegeStuff.net.
Now, the UT senior is taking the college marketplace by storm.

"MyCollegeStuff.net is the Craigslist, if you will, for college students where they can buy sell and trade textbooks, cars, find apartments, jobs, anything like that," Theisen said.In the last few months, Theisen teamed up with the president of InterStar Media.Together, they acquired the email addresses of every college student in the area, which allows them to send monthly email blasts for promotions and giveaways on the site.
"We've actually acquired Owens Community College now and Bowling Green State University," said Larry Jones of InterStar Media. "Owens has 19,853 and Bowling Green has a little over 28,000."

With the University of Toledo's 24,814 email addresses, that makes nearly 73,000 total, all in their target market. It's those numbers that caught the attention of housing development Owens Lake Commons. The 3-year-old development has now become Theisen's title sponsor.

"The most important thing is to get our brand out there to our target demographic (30)," Bryan Imes, VP of Operations, Owens Lake Commons said. "That's going to be the 18-25 year-old male/female individual."

Not bad for a business owner who is part of his target market.

These volunteers for the homeless know how to pack a good cause
By: Ian Perrotta

It looks like Mother Nature finally got the memo and winter has arrived. Fortunately for Detroit’s homeless, the Burners without Borders organization was already here.
What exactly does that mean? It means that thanks to the organization, over 100 of the local homeless population will be provided with a survival backpack to help combat the harsh Detroit winter.
“The backpacks are a great way to bridge the gap between the haves and the have-nots,” Kaltz told the group of volunteers. “They make it easier and safer to approach the homeless. Especially if you’ve never done it – all you have to do is roll down your window and say ‘Hi’. Just be sure to ask them their name, and tell them yours. It makes them human.”
(1) pair of winter gloves will be donated to "Burners without Borders" for every person who signs up for a FREE account on MyCollegeStuff.net
